A project for July 2022 #2: Cutting day

Not much of a cutting list, yet..decided to cut things down and see just what I have..
That ugly board…well, some was just not usable..

And was scraped…the usable section…

Will get ripped to a width. That doesn’t include bark…set this aside. The 2 longer boards…The spalt only goes along so far…then the board turns into plain-jane stuff..

There was also a chunk of leftover from the last project with some spalt…

Edges were tapered..ripped that to parallel…

Not sure IF I’ll keep the 2 on top..yet….but…some of the edges were a bit rough..adjust the rip fence to remove the “rough edges”

So..now I have 8 parts to make something with….how about a Lap style Writing Desk? With the hinged lid made from the Spalted stuff…with the sides made from the “plain jane” stuff….hmmm?

Narrow stuff is just under 3” wide…the wide stuff is 5” and up to 5-1/4” wide…BUT..all seem to be way too thick?

Decided ( while on Laundry Detail, last night..) to resaw these down to about 5/8” thick…Had to set up the “Kerf Kutter”...

Just over 5/8” between the blade and the fence…blade is up as far as it can go….works for the narrower stuff, just send them through on their edges..2 passes, done…..However, the boards that are over 5” wide?

All 4 edges are run through, rotate the board, run through…rinse and repeat…which left just over an inch un-sawed right down the centerline…hmmm…I do NOT trust the bandsaw for this sort of thing…it likes to wander around, way too much..more waves than the North Sea. So…Olde School…

Disston Rip saw, 5-1/2ppi, 28” long. The “8” is inside of the “D” in the very readable etch…..just follow that kerf..

I have a blue clamp, to keep the board from just tilting over…aka, sawdust catcher..

Saw about 2/3s of the way down. Rotate the saw and cut from the other end..

helps to know WHERE to stop the cut…as that last stroke is a doozy….off-cut pops off to the side. Set these 2 parts on the bench..

Dryer was done, so where the back of me legs….sweep the shop..

Load up the Clothes Hamper, and haul it upstairs…Cardio Workout was also DONE for the day…

Have 3 more board to hand saw..IF the Dungeon Creek behaves..

Lots of Thunderstorms coming through the area..we’ll see..

Stay tuned…
