I used to blog. Not a lot, and not here, but enough to have learned that it can be very cathartic. This has caused me to believe in blogging as a form of journaling (NOT a diary, a journal!).
For me, woodworking came along at a very tumultuous time in my life, and I learned that I can really escape the world by diving into the intricate details that are the difference between “useable” and “heirloom.” Admittedly, I have yet to acquire such skills that would place anything I’ve created into the later of those two categories, but that’s the point for me. It doesn’t matter.
I suffer (or enjoy, depending on the day) from both OCD and ADHD. This has been a problem for me in the world of woodworking, because as I have stated, my work doesn’t really reach the perfection stage. This caused me great frustration (OCD) and to give up quickly (ADHD). The good news is that since returning to the hobby within the last year or so, I have learned how to control these issues (the drugs don’t hurt either…).
So, when I post my projects, I intentionally highlight my flaws. I do this for 2 reasons. First, I have to. I can’t (and won’t) try to pretend that I do great work, yet. The second, and probably why I’m on this site at all, is in hopes that someone will look at my error and say “oh yah, I remember doing that. I fixed the issue by …” I mean, isn’t that why we’re all on this web site? To bolster each other when they do well, and help each other when needed. I know I’ve learned a lot from others’ projects, blogs, and forums.
Well, that’s about it. Thanks for reading. Cheers!
